Scotland is a country that is part of the United Kingdom and covers the northern third of the island of Great Britain.

Edinburgh, the country's capital and second-largest city, was the hub of the Scottish Enlightenment of the 18th century, which transformed Scotland into one of the commercial, intellectual, and industrial powerhouses of Europe. It currently has a vibrant Finance and technology economy and is known for it culture e.g. the Edinburgh Festival and book festival. Glasgow, Scotland's largest city,was once one of the world's leading industrial cities and now lies at the centre of the Greater Glasgow conurbation. The water surrounding Scotland consist of a large sector of the North Atlantic and the North Sea, containing the largest oil reserves in the European Union. This has given Aberdeen, the third-largest city in Scotland, the title of Europe's oil capital.

Our infographic summarises the size, skills, sectors and focal areas for IT companies in the Borders & South West Scotland. Companies are scattered throughout the area from the larger conurbations of Motherwell, Paisley, Ayr, & Kilmarnock to Selkirk & Lochgilpead. The top three sectors are IT, games & the public sector. There is a large focus on cyber security with 25% of IT companies involved in Cyber Security based in the Borders and South West Scotland.

This is the eighth in our series of infographics on IT Companies. This weeks is IT companies is the Scottish Borders and South West Scotland. The companies are spread throughout the area from Motherwell, Paisley & Kilmarnock, to Newton Stewart, and the isles of Arran, Bute & Tiree....

Our Infographic this week is IT companies in Stirlingshire & Fife. The main centres are Stirling, Falkirk and Dunfermline, but there are many companies scattered throughout the region. Once again Software development is the top skill (64 companies). Companies tend to be relatively small with 70% having less than 10 employees.

Our map this week is an interactive map of IT companies in the UK. We are in the early stages of loading data for England, but we have the data for Scotland. 

Out of 2,700+ companies, almost 2,300 are in Scotland and over 400 are in the rest of the UK.

Our map this week is an interactive map of companies working in the field of Big DataWe are in the early stages of loading data for England, but we do have the data for Scotland. Out of 42 companies working with Big Data in some form or another, 29 are in Scotland, and of these 10 are in Edinburgh.

We thought you may like to get an idea of the sizes of the IT companies working in the Healthcare sector and have published this infographic as complementary to yesterday's map.

We have figures for both Scotland and England, but please remember the English data is very limited.

From Alness to Darvel, we bring you a map of the Scottish IT companies working in the Aerospace and Defence Sector. The top locations for IT companies in this sector are Glasgow (10), Edinburgh (8) and Dunfermline (4).

We have started to load the information for the rest of the UK so there are a few companies from England on the map too.

Can there really be such a difference in the availability of Cyber Security skills in Scotland and England? 

Our current information suggests that about 1% of IT companies in Scotland offer Cyber Security skills and services and 11.5% in England.  Our data for England is incomplete but given that Cyber Security skills are very much in the public eye we felt it was worth publishing the map using all the information we have for the UK.
