Artificial Intelligence

Artificial intelligence (AI) is intelligence exhibited by machines. In computer science, an ideal "intelligent" machine is a flexible rational agent that perceives its environment and takes actions that maximize its chance of success at some goal. Colloquially, the term "artificial intelligence" is applied when a machine mimics "cognitive" functions that humans associate with other human minds, such as "learning" and "problem solving". As machines become increasingly capable, mental facilities once thought to require intelligence are removed from the definition. For example, optical character recognition is no longer perceived as an exemplar of "artificial intelligence", having become a routine technology. Capabilities currently classified as AI include successfully understanding human speech, competing at a high level in strategic game systems, self-driving cars, and interpreting complex data. Some people also consider AI a danger to humanity if it progresses unabatedly.

Many real-world scheduling and routing problems are difficult to solve, for a long time AI techniques worked towards simply finding a feasible solution. It was enough to build a plan for scheduling a production process, organising a set of deliveries or rostering staff, producing an error free plan represented a significant challenge. In many cases such an automated plan might well not be as useful as the plan produced by an experienced supervisor who has an intimate understanding of the business process

The Rise of Artificial Intelligence in Law

Since their founding Law in Order has been a leading supplier of document & digital solutions for the Australian legal industry.

In the film ‘Back to the Future II’, Doc Brown tells our hero Marty McFly: “the justice system works swiftly in the future now that they've abolished all lawyers.” Doc was referencing an imagined 2015, but in 2016 lawyers are far from being abolished. The legal profession, traditionally slow to embrace technology, is now at least partly embracing the opportunities associated with algorithm driven computer technology. At either end of the opinion spectrum there are two main schools of thought: 1) AI spells the end of the legal profession versus 2) AI provides the profession with opportunities it should embrace.
