A Structured View of a Small but Steady Digital Ecosystem

Based on Company Connecting’s November 2025 dataset

Northern Ireland’s technology sector presents a distinctive profile: small in scale, grounded in long-established companies, and defined by practical digital capability rather than widespread deep-tech innovation. Company Connecting’s structured dataset, built from detailed company-by-company review, offers a clear view of the businesses shaping this ecosystem today.

This year’s analysis highlights a tech ecosystem driven by small, established firms supported by pockets of more specialised capability and emerging skills.

Geographical Distribution

Belfast is firmly established as Northern Ireland’s primary centre of tech activity. It accounts for the largest concentration of companies by a significant margin. Additional clusters appear across Lisburn & Castlereagh, Newry, Mourne & Down, Antrim & Newtownabbey, Derry City & Strabane, and Ards & North Down, highlighting the wider spread of technology firms beyond the capital, even if at smaller scale.

Company Size

Northern Ireland’s tech industry is overwhelmingly SME-driven.
71% of companies are micro-businesses employing fewer than ten people. Most of the remainder fall into the 10–49 employee range, with medium and large employers comparatively rare.

The very largest employers i.e. those with more than 1,000 staff, are multinational subsidiaries, not locally scaled companies.

A Mature Tech Base with Fewer Very Young Firms

Northern Ireland’s company age profile provides valuable insight into the sector’s stability.
Nearly half (47%) of companies have been in operation for more than ten years, while a further 37% fall into the mid-stage 5–9 year band. Only 16% are under five years old.

This mixture suggests a steady, experienced tech base, supported by a smaller pipeline of new entrants. When compared with Scotland — where over 55% of tech companies are more than ten years old — Northern Ireland’s 47% marks a somewhat younger company base.

A Steady Ecosystem with Pockets of Specialisation

Northern Ireland’s tech sector is defined not by rapid expansion or dramatic innovation surges, but by consistency, longevity and focused capability.
Small and established companies form the backbone of the ecosystem, delivering the practical digital services that businesses in every sector depend upon.

Within this foundation sit pockets of more specialised expertise e.g. the companies working in cloud, analytics, security, automation, or early AI. These firms point toward emerging areas of future growth.
