Scotland’s technology sector continues to evolve as dynamic, diverse, and quietly innovative. Based on Company Connecting’s uniquely structured November 2025 dataset, this updated infographic reveals how the country’s digital ecosystem is shaped by small companies, long-term resilience, and pockets of world-class innovation.
A Sector Defined by Agility
Data from Company Connecting shows that 77% of tech companies have fewer than ten employees, with over 2,700 active across Scotland highlighting the sector’s vitality, entrepreneurial spirit, and adaptability.
Where They Are: Regional Clusters with Distinct Strengths
Edinburgh and Glasgow continue to dominate, together accounting for more than half of Scotland’s technology companies. Aberdeen plays a pivotal role as the North-East hub for digital innovation, with particular strength in energy, data, and engineering technologies.
Beyond the main cities, clusters in Fife, Dundee, and the Highlands demonstrate steady growth supported by universities, regional investment, and SME activity.
Innovation and Capability
Scotland’s ecosystem shows a healthy balance between maturity and innovation.
More than half (56%) of companies are classed as foundational, providing core digital services and infrastructure.
However, 16% are cutting-edge innovators, working in areas such as AI, data analytics, advanced software, and automation.
This layered structure highlights Scotland’s dual strength: a robust digital base and a rising tide of high-tech innovation.
A Dynamic but Shifting Landscape
While the November 2025 data identifies 2,709 still active tech companies across Scotland, it also records an additional 1381 companies that are dissolved. This reflects the fast-paced and often high-risk nature of the tech sector, where startups frequently emerge, pivot, or close. Although not all companies endure long term, this turnover is part of a healthy innovation ecosystem signalling experimentation, evolving markets, and the continuous renewal of ideas.
Scotland’s Digital Future
Scotland’s technology landscape is powered by small, often mature companies that combine deep expertise with a willingness to innovate.
Many are quietly building world-class products and services, the infrastructure of Scotland’s digital future.
Company Connecting’s data reveal a sector that is resilient and inventive.
For policymakers, investors, and researchers, understanding this structure is key to shaping future growth.
