A Decade of Mapping Technology Companies

Over the past ten years, Company Connecting has built a comprehensive datasets of technology companies in the UK. What began as a project to understand Scotland’s digital ecosystem has grown into a broader effort to track the evolution of tech across the UK, from small startups and scaleups to acquisitions and dissolutions.

The 2025 dataset now includes 6,750 companies spanning Scotland, Northern Ireland, and selected areas of England and Wales. The data covers not only active businesses but also those that have been taken over, merged, or dissolved providing a rare view of change over time.

What’s in the Data

  • Comprehensive coverage of Scotland (4,092 companies), Northern Ireland (748), and Cambridgeshire (522)
  • Partial coverage for Newcastle, Northumberland, and other regions in England and Wales
  • Detailed information on company status, size, innovation category, focus (product/service), and sector
  • Classification by skills, technologies, and specialisms, helping identify emerging trends and clusters

Unlike many commercial databases, the Company Connecting dataset was built manually and verified over time, a painstaking process that ensures accuracy and relevance. Each company has been checked, categorised, and connected to others through shared skills, markets, and technologies.

Why This Matters

Behind these numbers lies a story of resilience, adaptation, and transformation.
Many of the companies identified in earlier years have been acquired or integrated into larger organisations, a reminder that innovation and consolidation often go hand in hand.

Provenance and Purpose

Every record in the Company Connecting dataset has been researched, validated, and updated using open and verified sources from Companies House and corporate filings to company websites and public directories.

The goal has always been to create a human-curated map of UK technology, one that goes beyond keywords or algorithms to capture the real fabric of the sector.

This data is now being made available for insight, partnership, and potential acquisition. It offers investors, researchers, and policymakers a valuable tool to understand how technology evolves across regions and sectors.

What’s Next

This first infographic (See below) focuses on the breadth and provenance of the dataset. Future releases will explore:

  • Regional analysis (Scotland, Northern Ireland, Cambridgeshire, and more)
  • Innovation and emerging technology clusters
  • Skills and sector trends
  • Company takeovers and M&A patterns
  • Companies Dissolved via Insolvency

Built from the ground up, Company Connecting offers local depth and national insight into the UK tech ecosystem.

If you’re interested in exploring the dataset further, whether for collaboration, analysis, or data access, I’d love to hear from you.
