A snapshot of over 4,000 Scottish tech companies shows a sector built on innovation, adaptability, and strong regional roots.
A Sector Defined by Agility
Data from Company Connecting shows that 75% of tech companies have fewer than ten employees, with over 2,400 active across Scotland—highlighting the sector’s vitality, entrepreneurial spirit, and adaptability.
Where They Are: Regional Clusters with Distinct Strengths
Unsurprisingly, Edinburgh and Glasgow remain the largest hubs for tech companies in Scotland, reflecting their scale, infrastructure, and strong university links. However, the North and North East area stands out for its depth in niche and high-value specialisms, especially in energy tech, digital services, and industrial software. Aberdeen City, in particular, continues to evolve beyond its oil and gas roots, fostering a growing ecosystem of innovation-focused SMEs with global potential. It has a higher than average level of highly innovative companies.
The Maturity Curve: New Players Meet Industry Veterans
While innovation often comes from startups, the data shows that 55% of Scottish tech companies are over 10 years old. This mix of new and established firms helps create a dynamic but stable ecosystem with room for both disruption and continuity.
A Dynamic but Shifting Landscape
While the 2025 data identifies 2,497 active tech companies across Scotland, it also records an additional 1,711 companies that are dissolved, dormant, or undergoing strike-off procedures. This reflects the fast-paced and often high-risk nature of the tech sector, where startups frequently emerge, pivot, or close. Although not all companies endure long term, this turnover is part of a healthy innovation ecosystem—signalling experimentation, evolving markets, and the continuous renewal of ideas.
Looking Ahead
Scotland’s tech sector in 2025 is diverse, resilient, and deeply integrated into every part of the economy—from education and health to manufacturing and government. Whether delivering bespoke software or pioneering AI-driven solutions, these companies are helping shape the country’s digital future.
