We continue our "In a Nutshell" series with Steve Ross of Shackleton Technologies.
What is Shackleton Technologies and what do they do?
IT Managed Services Provider with HQ in Dundee. We specialise in IT infrastructure whether on-premise or in the Cloud. We also provide business continuity, disaster recovery and IT security solutions. We wrap all this up together through a strategic approach to IT with our clients. We look to build an IT roadmap for them over 2 to 5 years so they can invest and budget accordingly. IT is the base from which most companies are built. We work best with client who value this approach.
What do you do?
I’m the MD of the business and enjoy meeting clients and developing relationships. I also like to keep up-to-date with what is happening in our world and finding out what the future will be. You have to continuously stay relevant in our industry as it changes all the time. I also make tea and coffee as and when required!
What was your very first job?
Working as a butcher’s assistant in William Low’s in Dundee when I was at school and at college. One of the best jobs I’ve had as I learned about teamwork, customer service but also about having fun at work.
How did you get into IT?
My background is in accountancy. I’m a Chartered Management Accountant. I worked for Accenture in Aberdeen before starting the business 15 years with a team mate from my football team who had a background in IT. We felt there was a gap in the market for a premium IT managed services company in Dundee and Tayside.
Interesting fact about You?
That I used to play football for Tayport Juniors in the 1990s and we won the Scottish Junior Cup in 1996. The game was live on STV and I scored the winning goal!
Favourite Place?
Someplace where the sun is shining, you are sitting outside in a local restaurant, you have a nice chilled glass of wine in your hands and your family are having a great time. Does it get any better!
Dream Car?
I’ve never been one for cars although I drive a Volvo XC40 at presently. Walking and running is better, you see much more and you never know what you might find around the next corner!
Who would you most like to meet and why?
Jurgen Klopp the manager of Liverpool FC. As a leader is there anyone better currently? He has improved every player that has played for his team, he has united a club which is community-based but global. Also, everyone loves him, he is humble and is always smiling. It would be great to meet him to ask about football and leadership.
Current Aspirations for the business or your career
We have plans to take the business forward through acquisition and organically. We still have lots to do but that’s what makes it exciting! Through time, I would like to offer advice to business owners who need someone to bounce ideas around. You realise that you have a fair bit of experience and it would be good to share this with other people.
Any Advice for Others?
Easy – be yourself and believe in yourself. You never know where this might take you!
