Artificial Intelligence - it's everywhere whether you know it or not
Artificial Intelligence is becoming more and more prevalent in our everyday lives, from chatbots to voice-controlled virtual assistants such as Siri, Alexa, and Cortana. We are in the midst of a digital revolution which is ever more dependent on AI-powered applications. 61% of companies with an innovation strategy are reportedly using AI to find new ways of using data to innovate within their respective fields. 85% of Americans are already using AI-powered applications, with both industry and consumers adopting AI, expect to see a lot more AI-powered systems becoming part of your everyday life in the next couple of years.
Let’s take a look at how AI is already changing the world as we know it.
Automotive Industry
Through putting data together from their cars lidar, high-resolution cameras, GPS and cloud services, companies like Tesla and Waymore are able to leverage AI technology to create self-driving cars. Elon Musk recently announced that within a year Tesla cars will not require anyone to be at the wheel. Furthermore, he said that by mid-2020, there will be one million Tesla robot-taxis hitting the roads!
It doesn’t stop there though, AI systems can also be used to monitor driver behaviour. Israeli startup Eyesight uses deep learning in order to identify who’s driving and automatically enhance their driving experience by adjusting the seat, mirrors and temperature to the drivers liking. More importantly, it can also tell when you’re not paying attention to the road of feeling tired, in which case their system will make sure to let you know it is not safe to drive.
Healthcare
Thanks to AI developments, the U.S healthcare industry is expected to save an estimated $150 billion dollars a year by 2026, that’s in less than 10 years! AI is already having a big impact on the healthcare industry. Apps like ADA, use AI technology to answer your medical concerns. They scroll through thousands of similar cases, to give you an accurate explanation as to what your symptoms mean and if you should go see a doctor.
Another example is Skinvision, an AI-powered app which analyzes pictures of your skin and tells you whether you have skin cancer. Expect to see AI have an even bigger impact over the next couple of years, with AI-powered surgery amongst other developments on the horizon.
Agriculture
The agriculture industry is being completely disrupted by AI developments. Data is powering optimised agricultural practices and as a result, yielding better crops! AI technology helps in detecting diseases in plants, increases overall productivity and reduces the farming workload.
Startups like Ecorobotix, have developed a robot that detects bad weeds and removes them automatically without any human input. Thus removing the need for using pesticides and saving countless hours of going through plantations trying to detect bad weeds. Proper data analysis allows for more precise crop monitoring and allows farmers to take predictive measures to ensure external factors like the weather have minimal impact on the quality of their products.
As we can see Artificial Intelligence is already impacting major industries such as automobiles, healthcare, and agriculture. This technology is improving the ways in which machines operate and process information, and in many ways strongly improving efficiency, which in the long-term, should be beneficial. It will, however, be interesting to see how artificial intelligence develops while overcoming the current and future challenges for this new technology.
