Continuing our series on the Internet of Things our guest author Dominc Wolf takes a bit of an alternative view!

The Internet of Things (IoT) refers to the use of intelligently connected devices and systems to leverage data gathered by embedded sensors and actuators in machines and other physical objects? That's a mouthful, right?  So, if you want to succeed in this field, keep reading to find out 8 things you should stop doing immediately.

1-Stop using the word IoT
Are you frequently met with blank looks when you use the term IoT?  Most people don't know what IoT means, and the process of explaining is frequently met with blank looks. IoT is a blanket term for technology that’s used in many ways to gather information. It's far better to talk about the way it’s applied rather that use a term which can be off putting to many.

2-Stop selling technology
IoT technology is cool, but it’s not necessarily what everyone’s looking for. In other words, try coming to the level your customers are at, and understanding their issues before offering a solution.

3-Stop going to IoT Conferences
These conferences, as the name suggests, are for learning about IoT. If you’re already well informed about what exactly it is, it would be a waste of your time and expertise to attend such conferences, no? Take your business where it’s needed, for instance, the International Mining and Resources Conference if you have a solution for the mining industry. Spread your knowledge and thought process to customers who actually need it!

4-Stop confusing your customers
They aren’t down with the lingo! As a customer, you’ll have to choose between WiFi, Bluetooth, not to mention the emerging 5G. It’s already so confusing, and limited knowledge of IoT doesn’t make it any easier! Start helping your customers more by understanding things from their point of view and build on that.

5-Stop looking for customers who have a budget
Not only will this waste your time, it’ll be a sort of lost cause as well. Customers who have a budget will not really help your cause by investing in your solution, they will simply buy it despite its limited functionality. Hence, go after customers who are willing to set aside a budget for your solution.

6-Stop marketing to customers
Your customers receive blasts of marketing messages daily, whether these be through email or social networking apps like Facebook and Instagram, the advertisements are everywhere! Not only does this tend to get annoying for customers, but it may also confuse and drive them away more. Hence, pitch your ideas and solutions to leaders, analysts and consultants who can actually make a difference to your cause!

7-Stop talking to IT
Now you’ve probably heard this everywhere, but seriously, stop it! The IT department will basically just go as far as to assist in the implementation of IoT solutions, but it’s unlikely they will determine the business case.

8-Plan, plan, plan!
Planning is key for when it comes to running a successful future IOT project. Having a goal in mind and a plan regarding the execution process is so important if you wish to succeed, as you’ll have a clear idea of how to go about it.
So guys, here are some of my top tips, feel free to take what you want away from this, but remember, the tech world is expansive and bright, and there’s space for you at the table if you make it.
