So what is Big Data?

One definition is that it is data sets which are beyond the ability of 'standard' software to manage / process, and with high volumes being produced with a time period. The main focus is on unstructured data but it includes structured data too. See wikipedia for more info:

The Internet of things (IoT) is the connection via the Internet, of physical objects or ‘things’, i.e., any devices with embedded with electronics, software, sensors, actuators, and connectivity which enables these objects to connect and exchange data. Each ‘thing’ is uniquely identifiable through its embedded computing system but is able to inter-operate within the existing Internet infrastructure. It is a domain where devices communicate, swap data and respond as they have been programmed to do, largely without human interaction or intervention.

Nicole set up the social platform RelocateGuru to help people relocate and fit into new areas more quickly. She has learned a huge amount setting up and running the business. This week we are looking at companies working in the area of Big Data and Data analytics, complementing our article on Disruptive technologies in the legal sector, and our Nutshell on David Eccles of Wallscope, specialists in Artificial Intelligence and semantic technologies.

From our database of 3,300+ IT companies, we have identified 186 who have skills in the areas of Big Data and Analytics. These companies have a variety of other skills in the data area e.g. data management, cleansing, business intelligence, big users etc.

Our Nutshell this week, Vino Patel, has adopted a unique and radical approach to Cyber Security. His start-up company, secur-IT-ism, recognises the blend of skills needed to address security cyber security issues. His team includes graduates diagnosed with Aspergers or high functioning autism.  Many cyber adversaries have similar traits - so this is fighting 'like with like'.
